Die Zahl der Mobilfunk-Anschlüsse hat sich in den vergangenen fünf Jahren verdoppelt. 2011 soll sie um 10 Prozent auf 5,6 Milliarden weiter steigen. Besonders hoch ist das Wachstum in den Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern. Nach aktuellen Angaben der UN-Behörde International Telecommuncation Union (ITU) besitzen dort selbst in ländlichen Gegenden über die Hälfte aller Haushalte einen Mobilfunkanschluss. Festnetz gibt es nur selten oder gar nicht. In der EU wird die Zahl der Mobilfunkanschlüsse bis Ende 2010 voraussichtlich auf rund 650 Millionen steigen. Das ist ein Zuwachs von fast 3 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr. Fast ein Drittel nutzt mittlerweile UMTS. Die meisten Mobilfunkverträge in der EU gibt es in Deutschland: rund 111 Millionen zum Jahresende 2010. Es folgen Italien (87 Millionen), Großbritannien (81 Millionen), Frankreich (62 Millionen) sowie Spanien (57 Millionen). Zum Vergleich: In Russland sind es voraussichtlich 220 Millionen, in den USA 287 Millionen.
Viel stärker als in Europa und Nordamerika steigt die Mobilfunknutzung in Asien und Südamerika. In China steigt die Zahl der Handy-Anschlüsse in diesem Jahr um fast 13 Prozent auf rund 844 Millionen. Im nächsten Jahr wird die Anzahl um rund ein Zehntel auf dann 930 Millionen wachsen. In Indien steigt die Zahl der Anschlüsse in diesem Jahr um 30 Prozent auf 680 Millionen. In Brasilien gibt es zum Jahresende 193 Millionen Anschlüsse, ein Zuwachs von 11 Prozent. Technisch sehr fortschrittlich ist Japan: Dort verwenden heute bereits 96 Prozent aller Mobilfunknutzer UMTS.
