Erneut werden in diesem Jahr die mobilen Navigationsgeräte in Deutschland deutlich günstiger. Der BITKOM rechnet mit einem Durchschnittspreis von 310 Euro. 2006 waren es 351 Euro, 2005 sogar noch 475 Euro. Gleichzeitig verfügen die Geräte über immer mehr Zusatzfunktionen – etwa einem MP3-Player, mit dem sich Musik abspielen lässt. Etwa jedes dritte mobile Navigationsgerät, das 2006 in Deutschland verkauft wurde, war dazu bereits in der Lage. Ein Jahr zuvor lag die Quote nicht einmal bei 10 Prozent.
Auch die Intelligenz der Navigationsgeräte macht große Fortschritte. Viele Modelle empfangen inzwischen Daten zur aktuellen Verkehrslage über so genannte TMC-Dienste. Sie fließen in die Routenempfehlung ein und helfen, Behinderungen wie Staus automatisch zu umfahren. Konnten 2005 hier zu Lande erst 42 Prozent aller neuen Navigationsgeräte aktuelle Verkehrsinformationen verarbeiten, so waren es 2006 bereits 74 Prozent.
Mit Daten zur Verkehrslage allein ist es allerdings nicht getan. Für eine gute Routenplanung muss auch das Kartenmaterial in den Geräten auf dem neuesten Stand sein. Innerhalb eines Jahres ändern sich etwa 15 Prozent aller Straßeninformationen. Der BITKOM forderte Bund, Länder und Gemeinden daher auf, ihre Geodaten einfacher als bisher zur Verfügung zu stellen. Unterschiedliche Gebührenmodelle und Datenstandards erschweren derzeit häufig den Zugang. Harms: „Mit aktuellem Kartenmaterial lassen sich Staus besser verhindern. Und das ist im Interesse aller. Schließlich schaden Staus der Umwelt. Hinzu kommen volkswirtschaftliche Verluste. Sie belaufen sich allein in Deutschland auf etwa 100 Milliarden Euro pro Jahr – auf Grund von Zeitverlust, zusätzlichen Schadstoffemissionen und Unfällen.“
