Circuit Design now provides a new transmission and reception system specially tailored to the requirements of device manufacturers, solution providers, OEMs and for industrial use. The embedded low-power radio modem MU-2-R allows users to quickly and cost-effectively develop radio solutions in industrial applications for the reliable transfer of signals over distances of several hundred metres. The new MU-2-R, which is just 36 × 26 × 8 mm in size, fulfils the requirements of the R&TTE directive (Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment), is CE certified and supplies a continuous transfer rate of up to 4,800 bps in the licence-free 434 MHz frequency band (127 channels). It further allows users to develop their own solutions for device control and data transfer very quickly using the UART interface.
A technically mature alternative to ZigBee® or Bluetooth®
The new MU-2-R provides an improved coding procedure with forward error correction (Reed-Solomon code) that guarantees the secure transfer of data, even when burst errors occur or signal levels are low. With 10 mW output power of, the radio modem covers distances of between 500 and 700 metres. If end points further apart than this need to be connected, the range can be extended by adding additional MU-2-R modules; the necessary relay operation mode has already been integrated into the circuitry. The low-current MU-2-R allows independent operation by battery (e.g., supplied by solar energy) so that radio solutions can be realised without the need for complex infrastructures.
The device can be operated in a broad temperature range from -20 °C to +65 °C, making it highly versatile both indoors and outdoors, from use within individual buildings to remote data transmission covering expansive areas. Also, solutions based on the narrow band radio technology from Circuit Design offer several advantages over standards such as ZigBee® or Bluetooth®, including the robust transfer of data over greater distances, as well as the availability of 127 channels in the 434 MHz band. This makes it possible to avoid collisions and errors while operating a multitude of parallel applications compared with established WLAN and Bluetooth applications.
