We saw how quality data may be corrupted moving from the shop-floor to the higher levels of management due to multiple entries, updates or hand-shakes required between various software solutions. We also explored the challenges that multiple software platforms present when trying to manage activities like compliance, CAPA, Process Control, Document management and Equipment management.
We established that there is a need to have an application able to provide accurate quality data, while integrating with multiple software layers and executing tasks which are pivotal to the basic idea of quality, such as process control, CAPA and so on. We found that such an application does exist..
MES APPLICATIONS PROVIDE SINGULARITY OF TRUTH
MES applications provide non-redundant, most updated & quality related information right from the shop-floor to the top floor. Data which contributes to quality is recorded from the production floor, and is then moving from the online system to the operational database to the final data warehouse. All the while being accurate and singular, any update in the recorded data point is then stored similarly ensuring that data remain free from corruption.
Also since the MES is equipped to use the recorded information to churn out meaning from the millions of recorded data points (through the SPC or data analysis modules), actions associated with the recorded data can occur simultaneously. The real-time information gained from the MES allows for other Quality tasks, such as preventive maintenance and CAPA, to occur instantaneously, as soon as an OOS event is detected.
Quality management is also about containment which deals with limiting the damage an untoward event may cause. To this end the MES again seems to be most ideal, as it allows jobs to be re-scheduled, WIP to be transferred, operators to be notified, recipes and routes to be changed almost instantly, which all contributes to limiting the potential loss and quality cost.
