Four Darmstadt-based students are this year's winners of the German "Formula 1 in School" championship. The "phantomteam" won the junior class title on 9 May 2015, being the first hessian winner of the competition ever. Competing in the finale wasn't new to Leoni and Felix Schwerdtfeger, Oliver Ungerer and Vincent Keller: For the last three years, they qualified every time. "We gave it our all", says Keller, who is also team manager of the "phantomteam", "but we would not have won without our sponsors, especially DATRON."
The participants of "Formula 1 in School" are required to construct a miniature racing car approximately 20 centimeters long using special software. Then they have to mill it out of balsa wood and paint it. The students also develop matching wheels, axles, spoilers and ball bearings. The finished racing car, powered by a gas cartridge, then has to drive in a 20 meter time challenge. The jury evaluates not only the racing time, but also the car's construction, its booth and portfolio as well as the team's presentation.
DATRON has been supporting the four students since the team's first formation. Assisted by Paul Hanaman (DATRON CNC Application and Training), they used DATRON milling machines to produce their chassis. Other main sponsors are Darmstadt-based IT company PROSTEP and trade fair design experts DGM from Roßdorf. Additionally, graphic designer Ralf Kopp advises the team in designing the vehicle's portfolio and corresponding booth.
This year's model "PTOne+" was an all-around success: The team not only excelled in the fastest performance and best construction categories, but also in the best vehicle portfolio and presentation class. The German Championship Cup is not the only thing the four students can be happy about now: part of their prize is a team visit to the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Hockenheim in summer 2016.
