Daxten, a leading provider of Data Centre cooling and airflow optimisation solutions, announces its new tool-free CoolControl QuickFix Blanking Panel designed for more efficient and effective cooling solutions.
The company will show the new blanking panels and further products, solutions and methods to increase the cooling and power infrastructure efficiency at the free Data Centre Best Practices Seminar held at Daxten’s London office, 5 Manhattan Business Park, Westgate on the 9th and 10th of October 2012.
Differing from conventional blanking panels the Quickfix Blanking Panels are equipped with integrated fixing clips on both sides of the panel. To mount the panel the clips are pressed together with thumb and index finger, inserted into the rack profile and then released to fix into position. The new Daxten tool-less blanking panel fits into all rack profiles whether they are round or square holed. Torsional rigidity and the perfect alignment of the blanking panels is provided by a cross brace which runs along the back of the blanking panel. The blanking panels are also flame retardant to UL-94-V0.
A solution to a long standing problem
To balance the Data Centre’s energy and operational efficiency continuously is important for DC managers and very often an economic necessity. In the UK the Data Centre market it is widely known that focusing on cooling efficiency is one of the most effective ways to save energy and costs. To achieve this it is not necessary to make heavy investment in new cooling infrastructure or products. It is far better to optimise the airflow and the efficiency of existing cooling handler units: According to recommendations of the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centre Efficiency and Gartner the very simple and cost-effective method of sealing open U space in racks with blanking panels leads to significant energy and cost savings in Data Centres –and it additionally minimizes system failures and downtime of the hardware in the 19”and open frame cabinets caused by overheating. The conventional sealing procedure is a problem for the DC Manager as mounting single blanking panels in a huge number of server cabinets and irregularly equipped racks is very time-consuming, cumbersome and “fiddly”. The reason being, that it is necessary to fix every single blanking panel using individual cage nuts and screws. The larger the Data Centre the bigger the problem for the Data Centre staff to install and maintain sealing of openings.
Separating hot from cold
When using the CoolControl QuickFix Blanking Panels the energy savings are achieved by the separation of the hot and cold air sections of the rack. On the one hand this physical barrier eliminates the unrestricted re-circulation of hot exhaust from the hot into the cold aisle and on the other hand the blanking panels prevent a mixture of hot and conditioned air in the cold aisle. This mixing causes thermal problems and leads to inefficient cooling and higher loads of the cooling units as they compensate for the higher temperatures in the cold aisle. By using blanking panels this mechanical method of separating the air the temperature in the cold aisle can decline, without the active support of the cooling handler units by up to five degree Celsius. The energy and cost saving potential can be easily calculated by the following rule of thumb: For every single and passively decreased 1 degree Celsius the load of the CRAC systems can be reduced by up to five percent.
Further advantages can be found with the new Daxten blanking panels: Continuously rising temperatures at the front of the cabinets, caused by hot air recirculation are prevented, so that Hot Spots no longer have a chance to develop – and importantly the IT equipment hardware in the racks is well protected from failures or downtime caused by overheating.
