At the world's premier fair, SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN, pure thrills were on the agenda during the Young Welders' Competitions. The international welding competitions consisted of three parts: the National DVS "Young Welders" Competition, the European WELDCUP and the "International Competition". During the five days of the fair from September 25 to 29, 2017, no fewer than 100 young welders from all over the world came to Düsseldorf in order to deliver the best weld there. In all three competitions staged by the German Welding Society (DVS), the best up-and-coming welders were sought here in the four disciplines: Gas Welding, Manual Metal Arc Welding, Metal Active Gas Welding and Tungsten Inert Gas Welding.
The participants also included seven women from Germany - a number which has never been involved in the welding competitions until now. This was also pleasing for the DVS General Manager, Dr.-Ing. Roland Boecking, who spoke of a "small sensation". In advance, he crossed his fingers for the female welders in particular and this also helped. Because they were well-represented in the top ranks in the international competitions during the Young Welders' Competitions.
The Young Welders' Competitions started with the 12th National DVS "Young Welders" Competition which began directly on the first day of the fair. On this occasion, the best up-and-coming welders from Germany came together in the Kemper Arena in Hall 14 after they had already been able to prevail over strong rivals on the regional level. Sebastian Greiner (Gas Welding), Louis Harder (Manual Metal Arc Welding), Ruben Siems (Metal Active Gas Welding) and Dennis Spicher (Tungsten Inert Gas Welding) emerged from the welding booths as the victors. In addition to the winners in the individual disciplines, the team from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was this time able to take the trophy home with it as the best DVS state branch. Appropriately for this event highlight at SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN, the one-time guest in Düsseldorf, the new logo of the DVS "Young Welders" Competition was introduced too.
Up-and-coming welders from various countries in Europe competed against each other in the subsequent WELDCUP. After intensive contests, it was shown here that the participants from Switzerland can handle the torch particularly well. After the premiere of the WELDCUP in Essen in 2013 and the second edition in Cambridge in 2015, the world's premier fair, SCHWEISSEN & SCHNEIDEN, offered the appropriate setting for this European competition which was accompanied by the European Federation for Welding, Joining and Cutting (EWF) as the ideal partner.
On the penultimate day of the fair, there was once more a brisk onrush of visitors from all over the world at the welding workplaces in the Kemper Arena because the "International Competition" invited the teams from Germany, Europe, China and Thailand to take part in the contest. The team from Thailand finished in front here and its Head of Delegation, Professor Dr.-Ing. Fritz Hartung from Bangkok, was particularly pleased about this.
There is not yet any end to the thrills for the contestants in the top positions in the Young Welders' Competitions. Because the "Arc Cup" welding competition in China will await them in June of next year. Then, the motto will be "Fingers Crossed" for the German team.
At this juncture, DVS would like to thank all the sponsors who, due to their contributions, have made the Young Welders' Competitions possible at all.
