A Heavyweight Solution: EMG eMASS® Installation at thyssenkrupp Steel's Hot-dip Galvanizing Line (FBA) 5

(PresseBox) (Wenden, )
As part of thyssenkrupp Steel's investment in strip stabilisation at its Kreuztal-Eichen FBA 5 hot-dip galvanizing site in Germany, a particularly customised example of the EMG eMASS® electromagnetic strip stabilisation system was recently commissioned. This investment is one element of thyssenkrupp Steel's wider “Strategy 20-30”, which includes a low double-digit million-euro investment to optimise production capabilities in the Siegerland region in Germany. The new strip stabilisation system helps to stabilise the steel strip as it emerges from the pot of molten metal, allowing it to be kept straight and vibration free as far as possible in the air knife. This results in a highly uniform coating layer thickness across the strip width and length, enhancing production efficiency by saving resources and improving surface coating quality.

Beyond the standard
There are situations where you simply can't get any further with a standard solution. In far fewer than 10 % of the roughly 80 EMG eMASS® installations worldwide, the design team of the EMG Metals Business Unit therefore has had to reach deeply into its box of ideas and tricks. At the FBA 5 production line in Kreuztal-Eichen, Germany, due to the limited space available, the EMG eMASS® system was installed underneath an existing mobile pre-cooler. With a height adjustment of over 2 meters, the EMG eMASS® can be positioned close above the height-adjustable air knife but can also be lifted to an even higher position to allow access to the nozzle lips during operation, if required. During regular line shutdowns, EMG eMASS® is moved out of the line in this upper position, hanging below the pre-cooler, to make room for changing the air knife assembly.

However, during the project planning phase, 3D modelling revealed that the movement of the large bottom roll out of the zinc bath was obstructed by the interfering edges of the EMG eMASS® system. To overcome this challenge, the design team ingeniously engineered the two halves of the EMG eMASS®® to open like butterfly wings. This unique feature also enables the system to be lowered into a maintenance position close to the ground.
This innovative design not only addresses the spatial constraints but also adds to the system's overall weight, making it a hefty 8 tonnes.
