Hughes weist mehr als dreißig Jahre Erfahrung bei der Leitung komplexer, weltweit aktiver Hightech-Unternehmen auf. Als Non-Executive Chairman für Telecity von 2007 bis 2014 und Executive Chairman seit 2014 stand er dem Board of Directors vor, leitete das Unternehmen und definierte die Strategie für die Unternehmensentwicklung in den letzten acht Jahren. Vor seiner Tätigkeit für Telecity war Hughes mit leitenden Positionen der Thales Group betraut, wo er zuletzt als Executive Vice President und Chief Operating Officer eine Organisation mit mehr als 25.000 Mitarbeitern verantwortete. Bei Lucent Technologies nahm er unter anderem die Position des Presidents des weltweit tätigen GSM- und UMTS-Unternehmenszweigs ein, zuvor arbeitete er bei Hewlett Packard.
Hughes verfügt über umfangreiche Erfahrungen im Management von Wachstumsunternehmen, und zwar speziell auf folgenden Gebieten: Bereitstellung komplexer Lösungen und Services für Geschäftskunden, Fusionen und Übernahmen, Ausbau der internationalen Vertriebskanäle und Entwicklung von Führungsteams.
