In laboratory studies, these substances have shown several different properties that are hazardous to human health (carcinogenic, teratogenic, fetotoxic, cytotoxic). A dietary exposure assessment conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) determined that relevant threshold values for AOH, AME, and TeA had been exceeded. Due to this, in June 2019, the EU Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE) submitted a draft for EU-wide monitoring of AOH, AME, and TeA. When the “indicative levels” provided in this draft are exceeded, the causes should be investigated. At the moment, there are no legal limits for Alternaria toxins in food.
Using LC-MS/MS technology, the GBA Group provides testing for AOH, AME, ALT, TEN, and TeA in these food categories and others, and our limits of quantification are below the indicative values proposed by EFSA.
