Am 23. März will Sony die Playstation 3 auf den europäischen Markt bringen. Der eingebaute Cell-Prozessor ist unter idealen Bedingungen sechsmal so schnell wie aktuelle Dual-Core-Prozessoren für PCs. Mit ihrem Blu-ray-Laufwerk für hochaufgelöste Filme und dem Internet-Anschluss ist die Playstation 3 mehr Medienzentrale als reine Spielkonsole.
Die geballte Rechenleistung lässt sich auch für ernsthafte Anwendungen einsetzen. Sony erlaubt die parallele Installation eines Linux-Betriebsystems, das die Konsole mit einer Maus und Tastatur in einen Komplett-PC verwandelt. Auf der CeBIT zeigt das Computermagazin c't erstmals den digitalen Fernsehempfang mittels DVB-T auf der Playstation 3 unter Linux. Leser des "c't spezial Playstation 3", das während der CeBIT am 19. März auf den Markt kommt, erhalten die Linux-Distribution auf der beiliegenden Heft-DVD nebst ausführlicher Artikel zur Installation und Programmierung der neun Prozessorkerne. Das Sonderheft lichtet das Format-Dickicht um die Blu-ray-Disc und HDMI und testet alle erhältlichen Spiele sowie die wichtigsten Blu-ray-Filme.
Die CeBIT findet vom 15. bis 21. März in Hannover statt.
