Für die Untersuchung richtet man die Kamera auf den zu messenden Bereich, der Strahlensensor ermittelt die Hotspots, also stark belastete Areale in einem sonst wenig belasteten Bereich. Ein Signalprozessor rechnet die Messwerte in farbige Flächen um: Blau bedeutet leichte, rot starke Strahlung. Die Flächen werden dann geometrisch genau über das Live-Bild der Kamera gelegt. Neben dem Auffinden von Hotspots dient die Kamera auch zur Kontrolle von Dekontaminierungsmaßnahmen.
Als stationäre Variante wurde die Technik bereits in Fukushima eingesetzt.
