Auf Antrag von Samsung untersuchten die Hohenstein Institute die spezielle Innenbeschichtung von Mikrowellen mit Keramik-Emaille Garraum, die die Bakterien abtötet. Für die Überprüfung der antibakteriellen Wirkung wurde das Bakterium Staphylococcus aureus verwendet, ein auch im Haushalt auftretender Keim, der gefährliche Toxine bildet, die zu Lebensmittelvergiftungen führen können. Neben dem üblichen Test bei 36° C wurde die Wirksamkeit der Beschichtung auch bei 20° C (entspricht ca. der Raumtemperatur) nachgewiesen. Die Prüfung wurde gemäß der gültigen Norm ISO 22196:2007-10 durchgeführt.
Die speziell ausgerüsteten Mikrowellen sollen bereits 2011 auf den europäischen Markt kommen.
