IBM Adds Extreme Speed to Data Management Software Portfolio

(PresseBox) (Netherlands, )
IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced availability of IBM solidDB, in-memory relational database software to deliver performance-critical data at extreme speeds -- up to 10 times faster than conventional database software.

Whereas conventional database technology stores data on computer hard disks, IBM solidDB keeps data in main memory at all times, making it an order of magnitude faster. solidDB can be deployed as a cache to IBM DB2 data server or Informix Dynamic Server (IDS), or as a standalone in-memory database to allow applications to quickly access performance-critical data using the familiar SQL programming language. The solidDB architecture can support tens of thousands of transactions per second with predictable response times measured in microseconds.

The introduction of IBM solidDB supports IBM's global Information on Demand business strategy, which is allowing clients to rapidly use information to accelerate business growth by responding to changing demands in real-time, and enabling the rapid delivery of new business services at lower cost. IBM's approach enables businesses to use technologies like solidDB to access, manage and deliver information more efficiently, as well as to capture and integrate information in real-time across their enterprises.

"Real-time information availability is becoming increasingly critical to our clients and solidDB answers the challenge with real-time performance and uninterrupted data access at a low cost," Inhi Cho, vice president, IBM Data Management Marketing. "The addition of solidDB also allows IBM's DB2 and IDS clients to deliver new services to their customers and gain real-time insight by maximizing their existing information management technology investments."

solidDB's extreme speed is a vital resource for clients in many industries, such as ticketing and reservation service providers, web retailers, telecommunications companies and capital market firms which require instant and reliable handling of dynamic business information. Data from DB2 or IDS can be cached in solidDB to support peak workloads experienced by such applications as web collaboration, on-line mobile phone charging and stock trading. This fast access to information can also provide web retailers with the ability to personalize their sites for targeted audiences and maximize up-selling and cross-selling opportunities.

"Iskratel has been using solidDB in-memory database as a core technology for its leading SI3000 Multi Service Control Node product line," said Franc Dolenc, Director of Products and Solutions, Iskratel. "Having the ability to process 1 million busy-hour call attempts (BHCA) per CPU, and to also have Carrier Grade availability, was a major challenge for our NGN/IMS fully featured Call Server. The extreme performance and data resilience of solidDB has proven to be a solid foundation for our extreme requirements. We are excited to continue this collaboration with IBM and their highly focused team, in evolving the solidDB technology to meet our growing needs as we extend our offerings further into multi-media and Web solutions."

IBM solidDB represents the first in-memory software technology to be integrated in the Information on Demand portfolio as part of the acquisition of Solid Information Technology.

IBM solidDB, solidDB Cache for IDS and solidDB Cache for DB2 will be available starting June 24.
