IBM Introduces New and Enhanced Enterprise Storage Products Delivering Consolidation, Simplification and Improved Performance

Enterprise Storage Innovations Deliver Leading Technology and Cost Savings for Customers

(PresseBox) (ARMONK, )
IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a major new release for the IBM System Storage™ DS8000™ Turbo series, IBM's flagship enterprise disk storage system, as well as a new storage console, which acts as the equivalent of a "universal remote control."

The IBM System Storage Productivity Center, IBM's new storage console, offers a single pane of glass view into an organization's storage systems, thus easing the storage administrator's workload by enabling a consolidated view for management and configuration. Additionally, the enhancements to the DS8000 Turbo series provide innovations that matter to customers, giving them new ways to increase the speed of their data access and processing, as well as to simplify management and reduce costs while helping to protect their data.

"Today's enterprises require ever-increasing sophistication in their storage systems in order to keep pace with the deluge of corporate data and increasingly complex regulations regarding data trails," said Barry Rudolph, IBM System Storage Vice President. "With the improvements and innovations we're announcing to our enterprise product line-up today, we continue to remain in tune with what our customers need, as we keep one step ahead of what competitors are bringing to the market."

IBM System Storage DS8000 Turbo
IBM continues to build upon the innovation of its flagship enterprise disk storage system, the IBM System Storage DS8000 series, with significant enhancements announced today. These enhancements include IBM FlashCopy SE -- a new licensed function that allows customers to make a space efficient snapshot copy of their data. Data copies are an important part of data protection and testing solutions. With FlashCopy SE only the capacity that's needed to save data updates is used. This can lower costs by significantly reducing the disk capacity needed for the copy, thus allowing customers to use fewer drives, consume less power, and be more energy efficient while protecting their data. Another new DS8000 Turbo enhancement is Dynamic Volume Expansion, which can help customers maintain data availability and simplify storage administrator workload by enabling easier, online, volume expansion to support application data growth.

Innovative new technology further extends the well-established DS8000 world-class performance with capabilities such as Storage Pool Striping, which enables customers to speed data access and processing through high performance data placement -- without the need for special analysis and tuning by a storage performance expert. Also part of this new release is Adaptive Multi-stream Pre-fetching (AMP) -- a breakthrough caching technology that can enable up to double the throughput and dramatically reduced processing time for tasks such as data backup, batch processing, business intelligence and streaming media. The final element of today's enhancements is IBM z/OS Global Mirror Multiple Reader, which provides a unique optimization for IBM System z customers to improve throughput for remote mirroring.

The planned availability date for the enhancements to the IBM System Storage DS8000 Turbo series is December 7, 2007. IBM FlashCopy SE has a starting price of $6,500. Other DS8000 Turbo series enhancements announced today can provide significant value to new and existing DS8000 clients for no additional charge.

IBM System Storage Productivity Center
Like a universal remote control that will manage multiple devices, the IBM System Storage Productivity Center (SSPC) will allow storage administrators to configure multiple storage devices including IBM System Storage DS8000 series. The SSPC offering is a centralized point of control offering device specific configuration in relation to the environment for increased productivity. Administrators will benefit from the storage topology viewer, report, monitoring and simplified installation. IT managers will appreciate quick time to value, investment protection and reduced complexity.

IBM System Storage Productivity Center will be generally available on November 16, 2007, at a starting price of $7,500.
