IBM kündigt Fertigung des Cell-Chips in 65-Nanometer-Technologie an

IBM (NYSE: IBM) hat bekanntgegeben, daß die Produktion einer neuen 65-Nanometer-Version des Cell-Prozessors in der IBM Chipproduktionsstätte in East Fishkill im Staat New York begonnen hat.

Der Cell Chip, entwickelt von IBM, Sony Group und Toshiba, ist de fakto ein Supercomputer auf einem Chip und bietet extrem hohe Leistung für Verbraucherelektronikanwendungen, medizinische Bildverarbeitung, Konstruktionsaufgaben und andere grafikintensive Einsatzbereiche. Neben seinem Einsatz als Prozessor für die Sony PLAYSTATION 3 findet der Cell-Chip unter anderem auch in IBM BladeCenter-Servern Verwendung.

Ein Team von Computerwissenschaftlern von IBM, Sony Group und Toshiba hat an der Entwicklung des Cell in einem gemeinsamen Entwicklungszentrum in Austin, Texas, seit März 2001 zusammengearbeitet.
