IBM Poughkeepsie Facility Named 'Assembly Plant of the Year 2008' Plant Receives Award, Manufacturing Operations in System z, Power Systems, poughkeesie, aseembly, 2008, Jim King

(PresseBox) (POUGHKEEPSIE, NY, )
Poughkeepsie has been named "Assembly Plant of the Year 2008" by the editors of Assembly Magazine.

The Poughkeepsie plant, which develops and manufactures some of the world's most powerful and complex servers, mainframes and supercomputers, was honored for its manufacturing operations in System z and high-end Power Systems.

IBM manufacturing operations in Poughkeepsie and throughout the world are focused on a wide diversity of processes designed to meet customer needs and a long-time commitment to innovation. Poughkeepsie received the prestigious award following a highly competitive nomination process that centered on the following points:

Dedication to client value (product features, order responsiveness, and product quality) Creating a comprehensive LEAN culture (continuous improvement, process optimization, and cultural transformation) Acting with environmental responsibility, including practical application of green philosophies.

For instance, the plant is unique in that it employs both a build-to-plan, fabrication process as well as a build-to-order fulfillment process for complex, configured customer orders. In fact, the features offered on both System z and Power Systems are highly unique; customizable almost to an infinite combination of configuration possibilities.

IBM Poughkeepsie's supply chain processes and logistics operations have been recognized as world class. Independent supply chain consultants such as AMR Research have consistently scored IBM in the top five corporations for supply chain capabilities, as evaluated against all companies globally.

Poughkeepsie has been identified as an IBM pilot site for the Green Sigma initiative. The plant reduces the environmental impact of end-to-end supply chain operations by driving cost savings and productivity through more efficient management of energy, materials and natural resources while minimizing waste and emissions by-products.

"The IBM Poughkeepsie plant was selected for our award this year because of the way it has combined lean and green manufacturing initiatives to stay innovative in today's global economy," said Austin Weber, senior editor of Assembly Magazine. "We were also very impressed with the way the facility leverages its supply chain and interacts with customers to deliver just the right kind of products that they want, when they need them."

"IBM is honored to receive this award from Assembly Magazine," said Jim King, IBM Poughkeepsie plant manager. "IBM Poughkeepsie has a strong history of heritage and tradition, and adapts to new requirements while achieving high performance standards. And most importantly, our employees take pride in their workmanship, producing systems that represent the flagship of the IBM Corporation."
