Report: Ibm Outpaces Overall Storage Software Growth For 13th Consecutive Quarter

(PresseBox) (ARMONK, NY, )
IBM (NYSE: IBM) outperformed storage software vendors EMC and HP as well as the overall storage software segment in the second quarter of 2008 on a rolling four quarter basis, measuring revenue for the named quarter plus revenue for the prior three quarters, according to new revenue share data released by IDC[1]. IBM grew storage software revenue more than 14 percent year-over-year on a rolling four quarter basis, nearly three times the growth rate of EMC and nearly double that of HP, as reported by IDC.

According to the IDC report, IBM marked 13 consecutive quarters of surpassing the overall storage software segment, which was measured at nearly 12 percent year-over-year growth, on a rolling four quarter basis.

The worldwide storage software segment experienced its 19th consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in the second quarter of 2008, with revenues of $3.1 billion, according to IDC. This marked the first time that the worldwide storage software revenue exceeded $3 billion in a single quarter.

IBM grew in numerous storage software categories, according to the IDC report. Among all the vendors measured by IDC, IBM maintained its long-standing leadership position in the Archive Software category.

Additionally, the IDC report indicated that on a rolling four quarter basis, IBM outgrew the overall segment in the following categories: Storage Replication, Storage Management, Storage Infrastructure and Storage Device Management.

"As indicated by the growth in storage software revenue, customers are looking to storage software to provide stronger data protection, retention and recovery capabilities, improved resource utilization for constrained IT budgets and better energy efficiency," said Craig Smelser, Vice President, Storage and Security Development, Tivoli, IBM. "In an effort to address the explosion of data, IBM provides customers with an extensive portfolio of storage solutions - including software, hardware and services - to arm them with the tools they need to manage and protect their data."

IDC's report highlights IBM's momentum in the storage landscape. Earlier this week, IBM launched new storage hardware, software and services that serve as the building blocks for the world's strongest information infrastructure portfolio.
