Schon bislang konnten .NET-Entwickler unter mehreren Möglichkeiten wählen, mit dem Daten- und Applikationsserver von Caché zu arbeiten: Objekt-Zugriff über COM, relationaler Zugriff über ADO sowie der Aufruf von WebServices über http oder SOAP. Der kostenlose Download erweitert die aktuelle Caché-Version 5.1 darüber hinaus um die native Unterstützung für ADO.NET sowie eine „Managed Object“-Projektion, die aus Caché-Klassen auf Knopfdruck fertige .NET-Assemblies erzeugt. Diese Assemblies bestehen ebenso wie der Caché Managed Provider selbst durchgehend aus Managed Code, was die Verteilung in einer .NET-Umgebung vereinfacht.
Für die nahtlose Verbindung von relationaler und Objekt-Sicht sorgt dabei die Unified Data Architecture von Caché. Sie stellt jede Klasse sowohl als relationale Tabellen als auch als Objekte bereit. Der Managed Provider verbindet seinerseits relationalen und objektorientierten Zugriff in einem einheitlichen API. So können .NET-Entwickler zu jedem Zeitpunkt entscheiden, ob sie besser mittels SQL und ADO.NET auf benötigte Daten zugreifen oder die entsprechenden Elemente als .NET-Objekte instanzieren. Dazu stellt der Managed Provider automatisch generierte Proxy-Klassen für .NET zur Verfügung, die mit den in der Caché-Datenbank gespeicherten Objekten korrespondieren, und sorgt für deren Persistenz, Auffinden von Daten, Caching und Life-Cycle-Management.
„Entwickler, die die Vorteile der .NET-Umgebung nutzen wollen, legen sich mit der Entscheidung für eine herkömmliche Datenbank zugleich auf ein Zugriffsparadigma fest“, erläutert Jörg Klingler, Geschäftsführer für Zentral- und Osteuropa bei InterSystems. „Selbst wenn eine Datenbank beide Wege unterstützt, wird ein aufwändiges objekt-relationales Mapping erforderlich. Mit Caché und dem neuen Managed Provider erhalten .NET-Entwickler endlich den Produktivitätsschub, der für viele Caché-Entwickler schon lange erfolgsentscheidend ist.“
Dabei macht InterSystems dem Entwickler einen Einstieg in die Technologie wirklich leicht: der Download enthält neben einer ausführlichen Dokumentation aussagekräftige Code-Beispiele, und selbst das benötigte Caché 5.1 ist als Entwickler-Vollversion per Download gratis erhältlich. Selbst wer seine Microsoft-Entwicklungsumgebung überhaupt nicht verlassen will, findet noch ein Plugin, mit dem sich die .NET-Projektionen von Caché-Klassen direkt aus Visual Studio heraus verwalten lassen.
