Bisher unterstützte die CANopenRT Protokollsoftware von IXXAT die Interaktion verschiedener Applikationstasks des Anwenders mit einem CANopen Core-Stack-Modul. Durch die Abstraktion des CAN-Controllers als Socket-Interface wird nun auch die Verwendung anderer CAN-basierten Protokolle, wie z.B. SAE J1939, auf der gleichen CAN-Schnittstelle und parallel zu CANopen unter Linux ermöglicht. In ähnlicher Art wurde dies bereits unter Microsoft Windows durch Einsatz des IXXAT VCI V3 Treibers und der CANopenRT Software ermöglicht.
Die CANopenRT Protokollsoftware wurde mit den SocketCAN-Treibern für NXP SJA1000 und Freescale MSCAN für Linux-Distributionen basierend auf der Kernel-Version 2.6 getestet.
