Aktuell steht die J1939 API dem Anwender für die Programmiersprachen C/C++ und Python zur Verfügung. Eine Unterstützung der .NET Umgebung ist in Vorbereitung.
Auf Basis der Programmierschnittstelle können mehrere Anwendungen, die auch untereinander kommunizieren können, auf einem CAN-Interface realisiert werden. Dies erlaubt die Simulation ganzer SAE J1939 Netzwerke auf einem PC und ist damit ideal für den Test und die Inbetriebnahme von Steuergeräten geeignet.
Die Interpretation der Signale einer Nachricht (Parameter Groups) basiert auf einem Nachrichtenkatalog mit Standard-Nachrichten und kann bei Bedarf durch die Definition von anwendungs-spezifischen Nachrichten erweitert werden.
