Jenoptik delivers major order of thermal imaging systems to secure external frontiers of the EU

Following successful tests, Jenoptik will begin delivery of the first batch of an order of several hundred binocular thermal imaging systems in October

(PresseBox) (Jena, )
Jenoptik, together with its partners, won the development and supply contract for the hand-held thermal imaging system VarioVIEW(tm) 150 in an open call for tenders from the European Commission. In the context of BOMUK (Border management improvement: equipment supply to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine), the project behind the invitation to tender, the European Community is specifically promoting improvement in the surveillance and security of Europe's external frontiers (Schengen area). As part of that the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine will be equipped with Jenoptik's new thermal imaging systems within the next eight months. The total order volume for Jenoptik is approximately 10 million euros. With the current start of delivery, the largest single order in the infrared technology field coming from the security market segment will contribute to sales and results in the Jenoptik Defense & Civil Systems division in the years 2008 to 2009.

As the first manufacturer worldwide, Jenoptik is supplying with VarioVIEW(tm) 150 a thermal imaging system for large distances based on an uncooled infrared detector with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, with which persons can be reliably detected at night at a distance of up to five kilometers and vehicles up to seven kilometers. Apart from displaying high-resolution thermal images, the VarioVIEW(tm) 150 can also precisely calculate the distance to sighted objects - invisible to the human eye, and hard to detect with conventional reconnaissance technology. The integrated laser range finder, with a range of up to 5 kilometers, is based on a compact diode laser range finder of the DLEM series with a wavelength of 1,550 nm, also developed by Jenoptik.

The new VarioVIEW(tm) 150 thermal imaging system will be presented to the public for the first time at the SECURITY Essen 2008 trade fair from October 7 to 10 by InfraTec GmbH, Dresden, the exclusive worldwide distribution partner (with the exception of the North American and Japanese markets as well as military applications). A few days later, military clients will be able to take a closer look at the VarioVIEW(tm) 150 thermal imaging system and the Jenoptik laser range finders at the NIGHT VISION 2008 trade fair from October 22 to 23 in London's Olympia Conference Center.
