The contract was awarded as part of a modernization program for engines being carried out by one of the major car manufacturers in conjunction with the US American location of the Industrial Metrology division. In conjunction with this initiative, Jenoptik has been awarded orders for metrology equipment totaling more than 15 million US dollars, including this order, since August 2010.
The state-of-the-art, flexible and fully automated roughness measurement systems will be used for quality assurance testing on cylinder heads and cylinder blocks. Thanks to its modular design the HOMMEL-ETAMIC wavemove system concept can be easily upgraded for new workpieces, offers combined roughness and contour measurement and operates on a fully automated basis using innovative CNC technology.
The Industrial Metrology division was awarded the order as a result of the long-term supply relationship, the high level of customer satisfaction and its direct local presence. With its own sites in the USA, France, South Korea, India, China, Spain and the Czech Republic, the Industrial Metrology division has a direct presence at all the key locations of the automotive industry. In addition to the German site in Villingen-Schwenningen the division also maintains production capacities abroad. In its current structure the Industrial Metrology division has had a local presence with Hommel-Etamic America Corp. in Rochester Hills (MI) for many years and currently employs nearly 85 personnel there.
The order intakes from the automotive industry have increased sharply in the Industrial Metrology division since the 2nd half-year 2010. In the first quarter 2011 the division posted an order intake which exceeds the previous year's level by more than 70 percent.
