In light of the current volume of the solar market in the State of Illinois, it doesn't go without saying that solar industry representatives chose to meet in Chicago in late October, since with just 50 MWp, the market is currently at a relatively modest stage. However, this did not stop the Democrat Governor Pat Quinn from painting an optimistic picture for the future of the market in Chicago, Illinois and the Great Lakes Region.
With the help of the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS), the state plans to increase the expansion of renewable energies in order to produce 25% of its electricity via these sources by 2025; Governor Quinn also emphasized that six percent of this amount should be gained from solar energy. He also referred to the available data on installation increases of 76% in comparison to previous years.
Governor Quinn received support and approval from fellow party member and Mayor of Chicago Rahm Emanuel, who has already announced the implementation of his own solar program under the name "Chicago Solar Express". The program is designed to simplify the installation of small and mid-sized rooftop systems in the residential and industrial sector, and to allow for more quick and easy connection to the grid.
This was reason enough for the Joint Forces for Solar networking initiative to hold their last event of the year, the "12th PV Briefing & Networking Forum", in North America. The aim of these events is, together with regional and international partners, to discuss the developments and chances of local markets with industry players, experts and installers, and to debate the potentials of the solar industry in the places where it matters.
Thus, Allan O'Shea, Vice President of the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association, not only discussed the State of Illinois, but also the potentials of the entire Great Lakes Region. Brendon Merkley, Chief Operations Officer of Vivint Solar, presented local and national market developments from the installer's point of view. In the subsequent "Industry Round Table", the most significant branch representatives discussed how photovoltaics and its importance could be encouraged in the region, using examples from other national markets. The general consensus among these experts was that the trend was definitely leaning toward solar energy.

About Intersolar
With events spanning four continents, Intersolar is the world's leading exhibition series for the solar industry and its partners. It unites people and companies from around the world with the aim of increasing the share of solar power in our energy supply.
Intersolar North America takes place annually in San Francisco's Moscone Center. Since its establishment in 2008, the exhibition and conference have developed into the premier platform for the solar industry in North America. The exhibition focuses on the areas of photovoltaics, PV production technologies, energy storage and solar thermal technologies. It is co-located with SEMICON West and, since its founding, has become the international industry's meeting point for manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, service providers and partners of the solar industry.
In total, 576 exhibitors and 17,881 trade visitors participated in 2013. The conference featured more than 50 sessions with over 200 speakers and catered to about 1,600 conference attendees.
Intersolar's storied history of international exhibitions and conferences spans more than 20 years. Taking place in addition to Intersolar North America in San Francisco are Intersolar India in Mumbai, Intersolar China in Beijing, and Intersolar South America in São Paulo. The world's largest exhibition for the solar industry is Intersolar Europe in Munich.
