"Here in California, we have a collective goal. 33 percent renewable energies by 2020, it's a realistic goal. Let's take control of and shape the future of our nation together." With these strong, motivational words, California's governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. appealed in his keynote speech to the around 18,000 national and international guests at the opening ceremony of Intersolar North America. With around 570 exhibitors and guests from 70 countries, Intersolar North America is the most visited solar energy trade fair in the USA.
California is among the pioneers of western national economies when it comes to environmental protection and the implementation of new and renewable energies, Governor Brown emphasized. Alongside the goal of covering up to 33 percent of California's energy demand with renewables, Brown also revealed clear goals with regard to electro-mobility. According to the governor, one million electric automobiles are intended to be in use by 2025.
The potential of the US American market, and the special role played by the state of California, was also emphasized by Daniela Schreiber, Executive Vice President of HRCC USA Corp. in her opening speech at the "11th PV Briefing & Networking Forum USA". With around 200 visitors, the Joint Forces for Solar networking event once again formed one of the highlights in the official framework program of Intersolar North America.
Schreiber described the historic development of the US market, from one dominated by small systems in the early years - with around 262 MW installed capacity in 2007 - to one mainly focused on large scale systems in 2012, with a market volume of 3,260 MW at the last count. However, Schreiber also emphasized that the private rooftop and commercial systems sectors continue to develop sustainably.
In a state-wide comparison of the history of the solar market, California is definitely in the lead, followed by Arizona and New Jersey. The three largest project developers, measured by operational capacity, are First Solar, SunPower and SunEdison - all American firms. Alongside them there are a number of other developers active on the market. However, their systems are currently all either in the planning or construction phase.
These market analyses were complemented by a technological lecture by Bret Young, Director of Sales Samil Power US Ltd., on the challenges and changes in the solar inverter industry. Young compared the conditions for manufacturers in Europe and Asia, and highlighted the cost structures and sustainability of the companies featured.
In the two subsequent discussion panels, participants debated the significance of solar energy storage technologies for the branch. Alongside Bret Young, the panel was also manned by: Matthias Altieri, Head of Origination & Construction of Thomas Lloyd Group PLC; Thomas Koerner, General Manager US of Canadian Solar Inc.; Jay Golding, Director of Business Development of Enphase Energy and Daniel Wishnick, Building Technologies Division, Siemens Industry, Inc. The panel was moderated by Daniela Schreiber, Executive Vice President of HRCC USA Corp.
The political discussion round included: Lee J.V. Feliciano, Board Member of AriSEIA; Leslie Cole-Brooks, Executive Director of the Hawaii Solar Energy Association; Lyle Rawlings, Vice President of Mid-Atlantic SEIA; Steve Johnson, Board Member of TenneSEIA and Tom Thompson, President of the Solar Energy Business Association of New England. The panel was moderated by Bernadette Del Chiaro, Executive Director of the Californian Solar Energy Industries Association CALSEIA.

With around 3,000 exhibitors and 100,000 visitors spanning four continents, Intersolar is the world's leading exhibition series for the solar industry and its partners. It unites people and companies from around the world with the aim of increasing the share of solar power in our energy supply.
Intersolar North America takes place annually in San Francisco's Moscone Center. Since its establishment in 2008, the exhibition and conference have developed into the premier platform for the solar industry in North America. The exhibition focuses on the areas of photovoltaics, PV production technologies, energy storage and solar thermal technologies. It is co-located with SEMICON West and, since its founding, has become the international industry's meeting point for manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, service providers and partners of the solar industry.
In total, 757 exhibitors and 17,823 trade visitors participated in 2012. The conference featured 30 sessions with 220 speakers and catered to about 1,500 conference attendees.Intersolar's storied history of international exhibitions and conferences spans more than 20 years.
