Since the first books were sold on Amazon in 1995, the e-commerce sector has evolved into a dynamic market with consistent annual growth across virtually all industries. According to Statista forecasts, global e-commerce revenue is set to climb steadily in the following years, reaching nearly 5.9 trillion euros by 2029. This surge in online shopping has led to an ever-growing demand for shipping packaging. To mitigate the environmental impact of the packaging, the EU has introduced the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates that packaging in the EU must be recyclable by 2030. Among its key goals, the regulation aims to minimize the weight and volume of packaging, promote a circular economy, and ensure compliance with the extended producer responsibility schemes. One method of reducing the weight and volume of packaging is to use thinner cardboard or paper, and adhesives play a crucial role in that regard: If the package does not remain closed until it reaches the customer, the goods may be damaged, undermining the concept of sustainability.
In addition, the packaging used for shipping often needs to withstand different climate conditions, especially for temperature or moisture-sensitive products. To address these challenges, Jowat provides a free service to its customers and partners: The adhesive manufacturer offers to test substrates under a wide range of different conditions in its state-of-the-art climate chambers in Germany, Malaysia and the USA. The tests can simulate temperatures from −20°C to +90°C and different humidity levels over varying durations to evaluate the bond strength under extreme conditions. This assures customers that the adhesive will perform reliably on new substrates, confirming durability before use. Jowat thereby contributes to a sustainable development in the e-commerce sector and supports companies in their efforts to successfully adopt environmentally friendly packaging solutions.
Optimized stringing behavior for sustainable packaging solutions
Jowat goes beyond the secure bonding of packaging and dedicates intense research efforts to improving the adhesive cut-off at the nozzle. These thin, sometimes long adhesive strings can soil the packaging and require increased efforts to clean the packaging machines. This aspect is a central focus in Jowat’s development of sustainable adhesive solutions. An optimized string cut-off translates to more efficient processes because it reduces material consumption, minimizes downtime and conserves resources. To achieve this, Jowat cooperating closely with scientific institutions and industry partners. Last year, the enterprise invested in a state-of-the-art machine designed specifically for the detailed analysis of stringing behavior. This thorough research has led to the development of a new hot melt adhesive that can be used at temperatures as low as 99°C. Significantly, this innovative adhesive consumes much less energy compared with other hot melt adhesives, actively contributing to a smaller ecological footprint. These advancements underscore Jowat’s commitment to sustainable solutions in packaging technology and set new benchmarks in the industry.
