The Egyptian Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy announced Cairo Solar Farm’s eligibility to participate in the “2000 MW Feed-in Tariff Program- First Regulatory Period 2015-2017 with a 50 MW PV project”. Cairo Solar Farm availed a ~100 ha piece of land which is flat and rectangular in shape in the Benban region.
Cairo Solar Farm initially hired KRAFTWERK to conduct a pre-feasibility study in respect to three regions in Egypt: Assuan, Asyut, and Sharm El Sheikh. “The available grid capacity is the most important factor and determines technical feasibility. Because of the Egyptian grid infrastructure, which is determined by the transfer of significant capacities from the Assuan hydro power station, the transmission highway provides a good basis for integrating utility scale PV power plant capacities”, states Karsten Schulte, Managing Director of KRAFTWERK, and adds, “The plant will be connected to the 220 kV high-voltage line and supplies approximately 50,000 families with electricity.”
KRAFTWERK successfully lead the application process for Cairo Solar Farm’s participation in the feed-in tariff program and has opened an office in Cairo to ensure local presence. Hisham Tawfik, Chairman of Cairo Solar Farm, is pleased with the progress, “We are very happy with KRAFTWERK’S support and look forward to project implementation which is scheduled to begin Q2-2016”.
