Sapphire fibers have excellent material properties and are particularly well suited for applications at 2.94 μm. Due to their high melting point and chemical resistance, these fibers can be used under extreme environmental conditions. These fibers are commonly used in processing plants in which chemical reactions must be closely monitored.
Compared to the polishing of glass fibers, the processing of sapphire fibers is much more involved due to the crystalline structure of the material. In this process, the trick to obtaining optimally polished surfaces is not to fracture the crystals.
