8th International Symposium "Materials made of Renewable Resources" with awards ceremony in Erfurt

(PresseBox) (Erfurt, )
52 speakers and about 230 participants from 14 countries are currently meeting at the CongressCentre Erfurt. As part of the 8th International Symposium "Materials made of Renewable Resources" Dr. Nicolas LeMoigne from France is receiving the renowned "ALCERU Award 2010".

"The symposium has been bringing together innovative personalities from all over the world in Erfurt since 1999," reports Johann Fuchsgruber, Managing Director of Messe Erfurt. The central focus of the professional platform organised by the Forschungsvereinigung Werkstoffe aus nachwachsenden Rohstoffen e.V. (WNR) is the future. As in the longterm, both nuclear energy and fossil fuels must be supplemented and ultimately replaced by renewable and more socially acceptable alternatives. Even today resources of the 21st century such as sugar and natural fibres or cellulose, starch, vegetable oils and animal fats, serve as the raw materials for numerous materials. The speakers and participants are discussing the latest research results on this from 9th to 10th September. The lecture by Professor Röper, that deals with the joint discussion paper by scientific companies in the chemicals industry on the topic "Changing raw materials base" and the lecture by Professor Teischinger, TU Vienna, on the opportunities and restrictions of wood within the limits of its possible uses, are eagerly awaited by the professional world.

Cellulose Fascination

The "Alternative Cellulose" section by the Thüringischen Institutes für Textil- und Kunststoff-Forschung e.V. (Thuringian Institute of Textile and Plastics Research, TITK) is integrated into the symposium for the first time. The institute based in Rudolstadt/Thuringia has been presenting the internationally recognised "ALCERU Award" every two years since 1998. The 2010 award winner is Nicolas LeMoigne who comes from France. The young scientist receives the award for his doctoral thesis on the dissolution properties of natural cellulose fibres. Patrick Navard, President of the European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence (EPNOE) is holding the laudatory speech.

Cellulose fibres are very versatile natural fibres. They are obtained from wood, fibre plants and cotton and in a modified form are suitable for various uses. Cellulose is in the meantime used as wound dressings in medicine and also in technical construction materials, insulation materials and cladding. They are also in demand as "intelligent fibres" as they are capable of the controlled release of active substances.

Other sections at the established symposium focus on natural fibre composite materials, biopolymers, and for the first time also wood materials. The poster presentations and accompanying specialist trade fair serve to provide even more information on the individual topics, in theory and in practice. From 10th September, anyone interested in practical applications can also visit the "Green Days of Thuringia" agricultural trade fair, which is integrated into the narotech exhibition area for the first time in Exhibition Hall 2. "The symposium, which is supported by the German Agency for Renewable Resources e.V. (FNR) and the Thuringian State Research Centre for Agriculture (TLL) as well as the Consortium of Thuringia Chambers of Industry and Commerce, is the ideal exchange platform for all participants from university and industrial research and development departments", said Johann Fuchsgruber.
