Deshalb hat auto motor und sport für das Elektroauto Fisker Karma und das Hybridfahrzeug Toyota Prius die tatsächliche Gesamtemission auf Basis des deutschen Strommixes berechnet. Danach ist das Versprechen Fiskers, dass der Karma Null Gramm CO2 ausstößt, weit von der Realität entfernt. Der Elektro-Sportwagen verbraucht 32,8 kWh/100 km und damit mehr als doppelt so viel wie die besten Elektroautos. Damit emittiert er im reinen Elektromodus 162 Gramm Kohlendioxid pro Kilometer.
Deutlich besser als der Karma schneidet der Prius ab, der beim deutschen Strommix 106 Gramm Kohlendioxid pro Kilometer ausstößt. Das sind lediglich 17 Gramm mehr als von Toyota offiziell angegeben.
Bei seinen Berechnungen hat auto motor und sport den aktuellen Strommix in Deutschland berücksichtigt, der im Durchschnitt bei 494 Gramm CO2 pro Kilowattstunde liegt. In stark kohlestromlastigen Bundesländern liegen die Belastung sogar deutlich höher: in Hamburg bei 502 Gramm pro Kilowattstunde, in Nordrhein-Westfalen sogar bei 654 Gramm. Durch den höheren Atomstromanteil in Süddeutschland liegt die Belastung pro Kilowattstunde in Baden-Württemberg dagegen bei nur 327 Gramm.
