Wie auto motor und sport jedoch aus Unternehmenskreisen erfuhr, gibt es zunächst im Kleinwagen-Segment auch engere Kooperationen mit Nissan und Infiniti. So erhält Mercedes von Nissan eine Plattform für einen kleinen Offroader im B-Segment, also eine Adaption des außergewöhnlich designten Juke. Im Gegenzug darf Nissans Edelmarke Infiniti die Daimler-Kompaktarchitektur MFA (A- und B-Klasse) nutzen.
Das von der 2011 vorgestellten Studie Etherea abgeleitete Modell will Infiniti 2014 auf den Markt und sollte ursprünglich bei Magna in Graz mit einer Jahresproduktion von 50.000 Einheiten gebaut werden. Nun muss der Kompaktwagen als Einstiegsmodell für Infiniti das Nissan-Werk im britischen Sunderland auslasten. Der ebenfalls auf MFA-Basis geplante SUV läuft voraussichtlich in Mexiko vom Band.
Wie auto motor und sport weiter erfuhr, gab es sogar intensive Gespräche darüber, die Vorgänger-Plattformen von C- und E-Klasse an Renault zu liefern, hat diese Pläne jedoch vorerst auf Eis gelegt. Beide Unternehmen wollen sich vorerst auf das Kleinwagen-Segment konzentrieren.
Zetsche betont, dass jeder Partner trotz der engen Zusammenarbeit auf die Pflege seiner eigenen Marke achte. "Wir schützen konsequent die Marken, nutzen aber alle Chancen, die sich uns bieten. Wenn wir ein vorhandenes Motorenwerk von Nissan im amerikanischen Tennessee erweitern, um darin Mercedes-Motoren zu bauen, die dann von uns und von Nissan genutzt werden, dann ist das günstiger, als auf der grünen Wiese ein neues Werk zu bauen." Dennoch würden bei Nissan eindeutig Mercedes-Motoren gebaut. "Die Motoren werden, wenn Sie so wollen, in unserem Auftrag von Nissan für uns gebaut. Das sind Mercedes-Motoren, die wir von A bis Z entwickelt haben."
Ein Zusammenschluss komme trotz der guten Zusammenarbeit nicht in Frage. "Wir sind vielleicht deshalb so glücklich mit unserer Partnerschaft, weil e s kein Zusammenschluss ist, da denken wir auch an die eigene Firmenhistorie", erinnert Zetsche an die gescheiterte Fusion mit Chrysler.
