Das BHKW mit einer Wärmeleistung von 1,6 Megawatt (MW) und einer elektrischen Leistung von 1,2 MW ersetzt die bisherige Anlage, deren Reparatur nicht mehr sinnvoll gewesen wäre. Es produziert umweltfreundlich Strom und Wärme. Der Strom wird in das Netz eingespeist. Mit der Fernwärme werden 3.200 Eberstädter Haushalte versorgt.
Insgesamt beliefert die HSE über 8.700 Haushalte sowie öffentliche Einrichtungen, Kasernen und Industrieunternehmen in Darmstadt, Griesheim, Groß-Gerau und Babenhausen mit zirka 256 Millionen Kilowattstunden Wärme pro Jahr. Fernwärme wird in Heizwerken oder Heizkraftwerken erzeugt und in isolierten Rohrleitungen zu den Haushalten transportiert. Die HSE nebst Tochtergesellschaften besitzt und betreibt Anlagen mit unterschiedlichen Techniken: unter anderem acht Fernheizwerke, acht Blockheizkraftwerke, ein Gasturbinenheizkraftwerk und drei Biomasseanlagen. Bei Heizkraftwerken mit so genannter Kraft-Wärme-Kopplung (KWK) werden Wärme und Strom gemeinsam erzeugt. Somit kann die eingesetzte Primärenergie noch effizienter genutzt werden.
Darüber hinaus führt das Unternehmen im Auftrag des Zweckverbandes Abfallverwertung Südhessen den Betrieb des Darmstädter Müllheizkraftwerks. Hier wird ein großer Teil der Fernwärme im HSE-Netz umweltschonend erzeugt. So belegt eine von der HSE in Auftrag gegebene Studie des Ökoinstituts, dass 60 Prozent des Mülls aus nachwachsenden Rohstoffen besteht. Allein das Müllheizkraftwerk Darmstadt spart so mehr als 43.000 Tonnen Kohlendioxid pro Jahr ein.
