NDS teams up with Rebellion for advanced next generation set-top box gaming

- NDS’s Xtreamplay™ technology used to create a new HD gaming experience on set-top boxes (STB)
- Collaboration with Rebellion, the computer games developer, results in rich, next generation gaming experience now possible on STBs, without the need for expensive chipsets
- Rebellion’s “Rogue Trooper” game to be demonstrated on a STB for the first time at CES 2007

(The Venetian Hotel, Lido Suite #3003) - NDS, the leading provider of technology solutions for digital pay-TV, today announced that it has created a new generation of set-top box gaming by teaming up with award-winning game design studio Rebellion. Using NDS’s patent-pending Xtreamplay technology, the digital STB uses frame-accurate video as part of the gaming experience, creating a three-dimensional gaming environment for the popular Rogue Trooper game. The game is being demonstrated for the first time on a digital-TV platform at CES 2007.

Previous generations of STB games have been visually limited by the graphical rendering power of the processors used in typical pay-TV set top boxes. However, Xtreamplay allows for much more visually appealing gameplay without requiring expensive video processing chipsets. Instead, Xtreamplay uses the video playback capability of the processors in conjunction with information about what is happening in each frame to provide a truly immersive gaming experience.

“We’re delighted to be able to present the Rogue Trooper Xtreamplay teaser at CES. It’s very exciting to see people’s reactions when they realize it’s not a next generation gaming console, but actually just a set-top box”, said Jesper Knnutson, NDS’s Vice President Interactive TV, Europe. “Working with the accomplished games company Rebellion has allowed us to combine their games expertise, gameplay and graphics with our Xtreamplay technology,” he said.

Chris Kingsley, CTO of Rebellion, commented about the resulting game: “We initially developed Rogue Trooper to run on PCs and high-end gaming consoles, but the NDS Xtreamplay technology has allowed us to take our popular third-person shooter game to a new platform.”
