Für die Gateways DG834B und DG834GB steht bereits Beta-Software auf den amerikanischen Servern bereit. Finalisierte, und an die deutschen Gegebenheiten angepasste, Versionen werden bis spätestens Oktober folgen. Die Wartezeit auf diese Updates versüßt Netgear seinen Kunden durch die softwareseitige Bereitstellung von fünf VPN-Tunneln, die die beiden Geräte nach der Aktualisierung selbständig berechnen und terminieren können werden.
ADSL2+ ist der Nachfolgestandard des bekannten und weit verbreiteten ADSL, das bereits in vielen Haushalten und Unternehmen vorhanden ist.
Mit ADSL2+ können Datenraten von bis zu 25 MBit/s erzielt werden. Darüber hinaus erhöht sich die Distanz, die die nächste Verteilerstation entfernt sein darf, auf 1,5 km. Viele bisher nicht von DSL erschlossene Haushalte können auf diese Weise in den Genuss schneller Breitband-Internetanschlüsse kommen.
Die Umstellung auf den neuen schnellen Standard erfolgt über den Telefondienstleister. Bestehende Infrastrukturen müssen also nicht geändert werden.
