WiMAX ist eine auf Standards basierende Technologie, die drahtlos Breitband-Internet-Zugang ermöglicht. Derart kann WiMAX als Alternative zu Kabel- und DSL-Anschlüssen genutzt werden, ohne, daß dabei auf die ‚letzte Meile’-Problematik Rücksicht genommen werden muß. WiMAX wird feste, nomadische, portable und im letzten Schritt auch mobile drahtlose Breitbandonnektivität bereit stellen, ohne, daß dabei auch nur Sichtverbindung zu der Basisstation erforderlich ist.
Das WiMAX-Forum hat sich im Juni 2001 formiert und setzt sich dafür ein, daß IEEE 802.16-kompatibles Equipment von Betreibern von Breitband- und drahtlosen Internet-Zugangs-Systemen entwickelt und implementiert wird. Das Aufkommen immer neuer proprietärer Standards für drahtlose Netzwerke führt bei Privat- und Geschäftskunden gleichermaßen zu steigender Verwirrung und Unbequemlichkeit. Die Mitglieder des WiMAX-Forums arbeiten gemeinsam daran, Kompatibilität und Interoperabilität der Lösungen für die neuen Standard-basierten Netzwerk-Technologien zu fördern und zu zertifizieren.
