Microsoft Power BI ist unter dem Stichwort „Self-Service BI“ bereits seit mehreren Jahren in aller Munde und trägt maßgeblich zur Wahrnehmung der Microsoft Data Platform als führende Analytics und Business Intelligence Plattform bei. Um die Führungsposition aufrechtzuerhalten und auszubauen, investiert Microsoft spürbar in die Weiterentwicklung der Plattform und lässt den Funktionsumfang über kurze, teilweise monatliche Release-Zyklen stetig wachsen. Auch wenn der Fokus offensichtlich auf der Weiterentwicklung und Vermarktung des cloud-basierten Power BI Dienstes liegt, wurde das Power BI Angebot mit dem im Juni 2017 veröffentlichten Power BI Berichtsserver durch eine On-Premises Komponente abgerundet. Damit berücksichtigt Microsoft die Zurückhaltung mancher Unternehmen gegenüber der Cloud und bietet auf mittlere Sicht auch weiterhin die Möglichkeit einer entsprechend konservativen Datenhaltung.
