ODU has a lot to offer in terms of product management as well: Markus Rochau, when did you join ODU and what is your area of responsibility?
I have been working as a product manager at ODU since May 2016 and I am responsible for the ODU-MAC® Blue-Line.
What is the USP of this new product, the ODU-MAC® PUSH-LOCK?
The idea originally came from the customers, who were asking us to create an even more compact ODU-MAC® connector. Our goal was to offer a connector that was ergonomic, easy to use, and highly flexible – in a style that was as small as possible. The size was incredibly important, particularly when one thinks of the growing trend for miniaturization. The result is a handy hybrid connector, which can achieve over 5,000 mating cycles. It can be equipped with various module inserts and fulfils protection class IP67. Another special feature of the ODU-MAC® PUSH-LOCK is its relatively large M25 cable outlet.
We also benefited from the decades of experience the company already had with circular connectors featuring push-pull locking. The combination of this locking type and the modular design make these innovative hybrid connectors stand out from the crowd.
What is the benefit of push-pull locking?
Push-pull locking is incredibly simple and reliable. This locking type saves a huge amount of space, so several connectors can be mounted next to one another, for example – an advantage that is inextricably linked to its compact design. Push-pull locking, combined with low mating and demating forces, means the connector can also be used intuitively with just one hand.
ODU-MAC® is the name of the product line of modular, mostly rectangular connectors. This range is then further divided into Silver-Line, White-Line, and Blue-Line.
What are the defining characteristics of the Blue-Line product range (to which the ODU-MAC® PUSH-LOCK belongs)?
ODU-MAC® Blue-Line products are defined by their manual operation and modular design. They are economical, easy-to-use solutions. Commissioning is a piece of cake too, as the modules are fixed in position simply by clipping them into the frame. Yet another great advantage of the ODU-MAC® Blue-Line is that the contacts are replaced from the connector side, so the crimp-clip contacts are easy to release even when the connector is assembled.
What are the combination options for the new modular connector?
We offer a variety of modules covering signals, power, HF signals (coax), compressed air, fluid and high-speed data transmission. Up to seven units can be custom-fitted with connector faces at a maximum packing density – and with a minimum order quantity of just one.
What are the possible applications for the new hybrid connector?
Its easy handling and compact design make this connector incredibly versatile. The ODU-MAC® PUSH-LOCK can be used in measuring and testing technology, e.g. in rack systems, in medical technology, in machine and plant engineering, and also in other special applications such as the events industry or computer centers.
Who will benefit from it the most?
The user will benefit from the product’s simple handling, which will make everyday tasks easier. In the field of medical technology, for example, one-handed operation is a great advantage. The ODU-MAC® PUSH-LOCK is also available in white on request, plus there are up to six mechanical coding options to prevent incorrect mating. At over 5,000 mating cycles, it is abundantly clear that the ODU-MAC® PUSH-LOCK is extremely hard-wearing too.
How is it assembled?
The back of the receptacle is fixed to the assembly wall via a clip system – there is no need to bore any holes. Both the receptacle and the connector are very easy to clean, since neither have any awkward screws. The ODU-MAC® PUSH-LOCK is just a really user-friendly product, whichever way you look at it.
