You can use the advantages of a network only if you employ a server. With the new ICY BOX IB-NAS902 that is not too high a threshold, for several reasons. First, the user does not need a particular know-how. Second, it does not cost a lot. Third, the IB-NAS902 comes with a lot of goodies, e. g. a central data storage.
Basically it is an excellent enclosure for an external hard disk drive. Add a bit of brain, called server software, and you can use it to manage a small network. With an HDD mounted and connected to a LAN exit of the DSL router, that is easy to do using a browser interface. First the DHCP server of the router allocates an IP address to the NAS. Is the NAS not connected to such a router, the allocation job will be done by the DHCP server of the IB-NAS902 itself.
Its second server, SAMBA–for Windows and MAC network drives, is responsible for the entire network management. Up to 16 users can share resources. Sharing resources means it is defined who may use which file (resource) in which way. An example: all users are permitted to watch the holiday video, but only one is permitted to edit it. Users
can be members of a family as well as members of a flat sharing community, small company and the like.
The first advantage of the IB-NAS902 eventually is a double one: shared resources and more free space on the computer HDDs.
Now the second advantage: you can leave the computer switched off and save power, e.g. when you want to watch video and you have an ICY BOX multi-media player. To enjoy music or photos an XBOX360 will do. Those items use the NAS' UP'n'P server to access multi-media files stored on the HDD in the IB-NAS902.
A third advantage is remote access via Internet. This task is managed by the FTP server of the IB-NAS902.
The two advantages mentioned last show clearly that an ICY BOX IB-NAS902 is even worthwhile for a one-person or a one-computer household. Q. e. d.: the IB-NAS902 is ideal NAS for beginners.
