Many extreme athletes from all over Germany and Austria took part in the 3rd city championships in ice swimming in Burghausen, Upper Bavaria.
With a water temperature of almost 3 degrees and an outside temperature at the freezing point, a total of 90 ice swimmers fought for every meter in the Wöhrsee - the best were rewarded with trophies, medals and certificates afterwards.
Not only "hobby ice swimmers", but also several top athletes with world championship experience came to the city with the longest castle complex in the world at the end of January - the organizer Stefan Hetzer was particularly pleased about this:
"For us it is always valuable when we bring together competitive and popular sports in a beautiful way."
Every swimmer had to adhere to certain rules of conduct and was strictly accompanied by paramedics in every movement so that they could intervene in case of an emergency.
Thanks to the sponsors, a second heat cabin was financed, in which the swimmers could warm up after the competition in the ice-cold water.
For some athletes, the city championships in Burghausen were an ideal opportunity to prepare for the World Championships in ice swimming in Bled, Slovenia, which will take place from February 03-09, 2020.
"Serwus Burghausen" will start in Bled with a team of 6-8 top athletes in the elite, junior and master class and will try to repeat their great results from the World Championship 2018.
