Beispiel: Ein 1kW Solargenerator (mehrere Solarmodule verschaltet) liefert an einem sonnigen Tag 50 Ampere über einen konventionellen Shuntregler an die Batterie, deren Spannung 13.0 Volt beträgt. Die Leistung liegt bei 13.0x50=650Watt. Bei 13 Volt arbeitet der Solargenerator jedoch nicht in seinem optimalen Arbeitspunkt. Ein MPP-Regler entnimmt nun dem Solargenerator einen Strom von 16A bei einer Spannung von 50V - dies entspricht dem optimalen Arbeitspunkt des Solargenerators - und wandelt diese Leistung in 13 Volt und 61 Ampere. Durch die Umwandlung entsteht ein Verlust von etwa 5%, aber es werden immer noch 793W an die Batterie weitergegeben - ein Leistungsgewinn von etwa 12%. Die Vorteile eines MPP-Reglers machen sich in erster Linie bei niedrigen Modultemperaturen bemerkbar, da bei hohen Temperaturen die vom Modul abgegebene Spannung sinkt und damit auch die Differenz zwischen Modul- und Batteriespannung zurückgeht.
Ein weiterer Vorteil ist, dass durch die Verwendung eines MPP-Reglers eine höhere Solargeneratorspannung gewählt werden kann. z.B. 50V statt nur 16.5V. Wodurch geringere Ströme fließen und dadurch die Leitungsquerschnitte geringer gewählt werden können.
Bei Kleinwindkraftanlagen wirkt sich der Vorteil noch drastischer aus, da die Dynamik eines Windgenerators noch höher ist. Hier liegt die Spannungsänderung sogar bei 100 bis 200%, also von Batteriespannung (13V) auf 30 bis 50V, so dass ein Leistungsgewinn von 100% bis 200% zu erwarten ist".
