"The scope of what we can offer on the custom side is huge," says Bernd Murthum who's responsible for the development of custom applications within Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. "It may be a flat gasket of any dimension, a rubber-to-metal element or a seal of complex geometry that may consolidate a number of products into one. Local engineering teams work with customers to decide if an off-the-shelf product will suffice, or if a customized solution would be a better option."
Designs can be produced in one of over 1,600, often proprietary, materials that are specially engineered to meet the demanding requirements of specific industries. And, if no material fits the customer's specification, Trelleborg's dedicated polymer laboratories can often engineer new compounds or enhance existing materials to meet criteria given.
Compounds are available that are resistant to extreme temperatures, have outstanding cleanliness, are compatible with aggressive media or have the ability to withstand high pressures or vacuum conditions.
"Customized engineered molded sealing components are more than just a product, they are a holistic solution," continues Murthum. "When developing a customized engineered molded part, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is not just interested in the function it performs. In addition, we want our seal to perform that function more effectively, at a lower total cost while enhancing our customers' manufacturing processes and providing the customer with optimized performance.
"Working with Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, customers are allocated an applications engineer, and although we are global, the engineer will be local, speak the customer's language and understand their market. Based on an application's criteria, our engineers provide customers with a number of sealing options, utilizing not only their own knowledge but also our international development network.
"We pride ourselves on our advanced development capabilities," Murthum concludes. "Using the latest virtual design technology and finite element analysis techniques, we'll produce a customized engineered design to meet or exceed your specifications."
Samples from in-house prototyping facilities can be proved in a customer's application or on specially-designed test equipment at one of Trelleborg's global research and development centers. In addition, if required Trelleborg can work with customers to help develop parts suitable for automated assembly, assist in specification of process machinery and value analyze manufacturing processes the total cost of production through innovative seal design.
