ICANN hat in einer als Ereignis inszenierten, im Internet weltweit übertragenen Pressekonferenz den Startschuß für die Neuen Top Level Domains. In der von ICANN veröffentlichten Liste von rund 1900 Bewerbungen findet man auch die aaa-Domains.

Der Bewerber für die aaa-Domain ist -wie bereits bemerkt- die American Automobile Association. Die aaa-Domains sollen auf die Organisation der American Automobile Association und seine Mitglieder beschränkt sein. Somit sind die aaa-domains eine beschränkte Domain - wie beispielsweise die aero-domains. Allerdings besteht ein Unterschied der aaa-domains zu aero-domains: Die American Automobile Association hat 53 Millionen Mitglieder.
