The alternative DNS roots know -among many others- these domains: ".ART, .BOOKS, .CHAT, .DESIGN, .FILM, .GREEN, .HELP, .INC, .LAW, .MUSIC, .NEWS, .PRESS, .RADIO, .SHOP, .TALK, .UNION, .VIDEO, .WORLD"
ICANN has been powerfully contested because of the introduction of New Top Level Domains. I think, if ICANN would not have introduced the new Top Level Domains, others would have been encouraged to continue with their offers of new Top Level Domains.
You can only use these domains of the alternative DNS roots with a plugin or within a limited net. This is the real danger concerning the fragmentation of the internet.
It seems, that companies and persons offering alternative roots are against any regulation and feel often as freedom fighters. I respect this feeling and the intentions of these persons.
The multi-stake holder model of ICANN gives a great chance of a democratic internet. The discussion about .xxx and the New Top Level Domains have shown, that the NGO ICANN resists pressures of governments. "Freedomain fighters" should engage at the institutions of ICANN to make the world safe for a democratic internet.
