Eine kleine Beratungsfirma in der Luftfahrtbranche hat typischerweise drei Domains: eine country-code Domain (z.B. .de-Domain), eine internationale .com-Domain und eine .aero-Domain. Letztere ist den Mitgliedern der sog. »aviation community« vorbehalten. Das .aero im Domainname identifiziert die Firma eindeutig als Teil der Luftfahrtbranche.
Durch die Einführung neuer generischer Top-Level-Domains werden nun auch viele Firmen anderer Branchen die Möglichkeit erhalten, ebenfalls eine Domain mit Sach- oder Branchenbezug zu registrieren. Die Vorteile liegen genauso auf der Hand wie bei der .aero-Domain.
Es ist damit zu rechnen, dass viele dieser neuen generischen Domains mit speziellem Sach- oder Branchenbezug ein höheres Ranking in Suchmachinen erhalten werden als eine country-code Domain, weil nun auch in der Domainendung rechts vom Punkt wichtige Schlüsselwörter enthalten sind. Es ist unbestritten, dass diese »Keywords« beim Ranking durch Suchmaschinen wie Google eine große Rolle spielen.
