Der amerikanische Chip-Hersteller AMD hat ein ehrgeiziges Ziel: Bis zum Jahr 2015 will AMD 50% der Weltbevölkerung mit Computern ausstatten - nicht mit herkömmlichen lauten, teuren und energiefressenden PCs, sondern mit dem Personal Internet Communicator (PIC)!

Das Besondere: Der Personal Internet Communicator richtet sich nicht an Europäer und Amerikaner, sondern an die sogenannte "Dritte Welt". Gerade eben wurde der PIC in Indien vorgestellt; in Kürze folgen Mexiko, Mittelamerika und andere Staaten.

Marktgerecht für die Entwicklungsländer wurde der Preis kalkuliert: Nur 185 Dollar (umgerechnet ca. 145 Euro) kostet das komplette Gerät. Dafür erhält der Kunde einen Computer auf Windows CE-Basis mit 10 GByte-Marken-Festplatte, 128 MByte RAM (Marken-Chips), minimalem Energieverbrauch und einem kompletten Paket an Anwendungssoftware.

Und hier kommt SoftMaker ins Spiel: Statt Microsoft Word und Excel hat AMD die Software vom deutschen Softwarehaus SoftMaker lizenziert und liefert deren Word-kompatible Textverarbeitung TextMaker und Excel-kompatible Tabellenkalkulation PlanMaker weltweit mit jedem Gerät aus.

Damit werden Millionen von Anwendern auf der ganzen Welt mit TextMaker und PlanMaker arbeiten und leistungsstarke Office-Software in ihrer Muttersprache nutzen können.
