More technology doesn’t automatically mean greater efficiency—a realization that is gaining traction in the transport and logistics sector. While German companies are at the forefront of adopting modern technologies, they simultaneously struggle with efficiently managing their growing fleets of devices. This is highlighted by recent findings from SOTI, the leading provider of Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solutions, which will be presented at LogiMAT 2025 in Stuttgart from March 11 to 13.
German Logistics Leading Digitally: Significant Advantage in Technology Usage
The numbers speak for themselves: German logistics companies rely significantly more on digital tools than their international competitors. The SOTI Transport & Logistics Industry Report 2024 reveals that 57% of German employees use RFID readers multiple times a week—a clear lead over the global average of 46%. Germany also outpaces global averages in the use of digital forms (40% vs. 35% globally) and GPS tracking (39% vs. 30% globally).
Growing Device Fleets Overwhelm IT Teams
However, technological leadership brings new challenges. The SOTI State of Mobility Report 2023 uncovers a worrying trend: over half of German IT teams (53%) lack the resources needed to resolve issues. Even more concerning, 57% of companies have no visibility into the maintenance needs of their device batteries. This lack of transparency could become the Achilles' heel of digitalization.
Tracking Technologies: Balancing Efficiency Gains and Privacy Concerns
Particularly intriguing is the ambivalent stance on tracking technology. While 80% of German employees support tracking shipments and 74% even desire more vehicle tracking technology, 61% view the tracking of their work devices as an invasion of privacy. This discrepancy underscores the need for balanced implementation strategies.
Sustainability as an Additional Challenge for the Industry
The integration of sustainability adds another layer of complexity for the sector. Nearly three-quarters (73%) of German respondents report that sustainability policies complicate their daily work—significantly more than the global average of 54%. This highlights the urgent need for solutions that combine efficiency and sustainability.
Practical Example: Successful Digital Transformation in Logistics Operations
One example of effectively overcoming these challenges comes from Austrian Post:
“With SOTI’s EMM solutions, we can centrally manage our mobile devices and proactively identify issues before they disrupt our delivery processes,” said Stefan Raffeiner, VP Digital Logistics Platform “This not only boosts our efficiency but also reduces downtime and associated costs. For us as a logistics company, this is a crucial competitive advantage.”
“The study findings highlight a central challenge for our industry,” comments Stefan Mennecke, VP of Sales, MEA, Central, Southern and Eastern Europe at SOTI. “German transport and logistics companies are investing heavily in new technologies, but the efficient management of growing device fleets overwhelms many IT teams. At LogiMAT 2025, we’ll showcase how businesses can solve this dilemma—with EMM solutions that simplify centralized device management while also addressing sustainability considerations. Success lies not just in adopting new technologies but in managing them intelligently.”
