The United Kingdom has just sent gold items back to Ghana.
Some of Ghana's crown jewels were returned as part of long-term loan agreements. The 32 items included a golden peace pipe, a state sword, a royal cap and golden insignia. The current Asante King Otumfo Osei Tutu II will certainly have been pleased. After all, the items also have spiritual significance. However, it is probably not so pleasing that the British describe this as a loan, while the Asante are more interested in a permanent return.
The golden pieces were mostly plundered during the wars between the British and the Asante in the 19th century. The Asante were one of the few peoples in Africa to defend themselves against European invaders. At the time, the Asante were one of the most powerful states in West Africa. There were four wars between the United Kingdom of Great Britain (and Ireland) and the Asante Empire. After its independence, Ghana joined the Commonwealth in 1957. Today, the kingdom of the Asante King is part of Ghana's democracy.
It can still happen that the Asante King needs assistance when he has to shake hands, as his arm is hung with many heavy gold bracelets. The so-called "Gold Coast" stands for a stretch of coast in West Africa that is roughly the coast of modern-day Ghana.
