SONAR arbeitet mit einer verhaltensbasierten Virenerkennung. Somit ist es über diese Technik möglich, unbekannte Schadprogramme abzuwehren, für die noch keine entsprechenden Signaturen vorliegen - ganz gleich, um welche Art von Schadprogramm es sich dabei handelt wie Viren, Trojaner, Würmer oder Spionageprogramme. Dieser neue Erkennungsmechanismus basiert auf einer Technologie des Sicherheitsspezialisten WholeSecurity Inc., der 2005 von Symantec akquiriert wurde. Die Aktualisierung der Norton Sicherheitssoftware mit SONAR erfolgt automatisch über die LiveUpdate-Funktion.
Die neue Erkennungsmethode greift auf umfangreiche Informationen über das Verhalten von Applikationen zurück, wodurch zum einen die Erkennung unbekannter Schädlinge verbessert wird, zum anderen die Anzahl von Fehlalarmen mit einer Quote von 0,0004 Prozent erheblich reduziert wird: Das heißt, nur 4 Fehlalarme bei 1 Millionen Anwendern. Ein zusätzlicher Vorteil: Die Methode erkennt und entfernt Schadprogramme automatisch, ohne, dass Nutzer eine Warnmeldung erhalten beziehungsweise selber entscheiden und eingreifen müssen.
Desweiteren sind Norton AntiVirus, Norton Internet Security und Norton Confidential auch als Versionen erhältlich, die auf dem neuen Windows Vista Betriebssystem lauffähig sind. Nutzer, die bereits Norton Internet Security / Norton AntiVirus der Versionen 2006 oder 2007, oder Norton Confidential nutzen und auf Vista umsteigen möchten, erhalten automatisch eine kostenlose Aktualisierung.
