Aflatoxins, toxic compounds produced by certain types of mold, are most commonly found in grains, nuts, and spices. When livestock are fed grain that is contaminated with Aflatoxin B1, they metabolize it into Aflatoxin M1, a potent carcinogenic. Aflatoxin M1 is then passed into the milk of the animal. The US sets the action level for Aflatoxins at 20 ppb for most foods, and at 0.5 ppb for Aflatoxin M1 in milk.
Staying informed about the quantity of toxins in your products helps you make strategic and safe decisions to protect your business and to offer your clients a safe product.
