Die Malware, die von Trend Micro TROJ_PGPCODER.A benannt wurde, bestätigt den bereits seit einigen Monaten zu beobachtenden Trend, dass Autoren von Computer-Schädlingen zunehmend finanzielle Motive verfolgen.
"Mit PGPCODER.A ist jetzt ein besonders dreister Schädling im Umlauf. Opfer, denen sensible Daten verschlüsselt wurden, werden möglicherweise auf die Forderung des Erpressers eingehen", so Raimund Genes, President of European Operations bei Trend Micro. "Einmal mehr zeigt sich deutlich, wie wichtig eine Antiviren-Software der neuesten Generation ist, damit eine Infektion erst gar nicht stattfindet."
Ganz neu ist die Funktionsweise von TROJ_PGPCODER.A nicht. Bereits um 1989 herum war mit AIDS TROJAN DISK eine infizierte Diskette im Umlauf, die Dateien verschlüsselte und eine Entschlüsselung gegen Bezahlung anbot. Damals wurde der Autor des Trojaners überführt und zu einer Haftstrafe verurteilt.
